Municipal Power Plant in Písek

The municipal power plant in Písek is the oldest functioning water power plant in Bohemia. It was founded aft er a successful demonstration of lighting in the town by František Křižík on 23 June 1887. Písek thus became the fi rst town in Bohemia with permanent public electric lighting. It was put into operation on 31 August 1888 in the premises of the former Podskalí Mill. The building, including its machinery, is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

In the power plant you will discover that the beginnings of electrical lighting in Písek were not easy. Mockers used to say in rhymes (in Czech): The Písek electricity doesn’t shine, it only flickers.
